A fascinating new member has joined the Rotary Club of Northallerton. Ian Isherwood, the son of a farming family, worked as an agronomist in North Yorkshire, advising farmers on methods to increase crop yield. He later became a grain trader in Lincolnshire, before moving to Worcestershire to farm hops for beer making. He was a hop trader around the world and travelled widely, particularly in the United States of America. He proudly recalls having visited all but two of the states in the USA.
Ian is now retired and living in Bedale with his wife Cherry, and his step-daughter is a dentist in Ripon. He maintains his interest in hops, and during a talk to the Rotary Club he offered samples of beer to point out the varieties of hops in different beers. His talk was therefore much enjoyed!
At his induction as a member of the Club, Ian said “I came to know the Rotary International organisation well from my visits to the USA, and on retirement I was determined to join this worthy charity. I admire Rotary’s work in the community, and I look forward to contributing to Northallerton Rotary Club’s charitable activities.”
